Lip Pimples: How To Treat And Avoid Them

L ip pimples, no matter how big or small, are irritating to deal with. Not only are they an eyesore in the mirror (let's be honest, that's what most of us are worried about), but they also cause an uncomfortable degree of pain. The aching on the lip and the stress about the pimple potentially ruining one's physical appearance leads to annoyance and frustration. These days we wear masks, and while that can aid in hiding the pimples, it also increases the chances of the lip pimples occurring again for those of us who can't seem to get rid of them.

What Causes Lip Pimples?

Lip pimples are caused by several reasons including:

  • Clogged pores (by sebum, dead skin cells, etc)
  • Overproduction of oil
  • Infected hair follicles
  • History of acne
  • Side effects of certain medication
  • Foods are rich in fats, dairy, and sugar, etc.

Tips on how to avoid lip pimples:

Here are a bunch of easy tips that will help you avoid lip pimples. Following these tips will both reduce your chances of developing pimples on and around your lips and help clear them faster.

  • Keep your hands off your face

Your fingertips have been everywhere and are home to uncountable bacteria. Touching your lips and face to wipe at them or to pick at your lips will increase the chances of follicle infections and push oil and dead skin cells into your pores, increasing the chances of lip pimples

  • Hygiene is key

Wash your face and mouth with mild soaps and keep your oral hygiene in check. Don't wipe your face and lips with used towels or handkerchiefs. Always clean your makeup thoroughly before going to bed.

  • Avoid products that irritate your skin

Is using a certain lip balm or makeup product ending up with a lip lined with pimples? Stop using it immediately. Start noticing your patterns and note down products that are harsh on your skin. Once you start avoiding harsh products that irritate your skin, you will notice a change immediately.

  • Don't pop that zit!

Popping a lip pimple can be tempting. That little white head is practically begging you to be picked at and squeezed to be relieved, isn't it? Don't touch it, though! It's a trap. Not only will it spread the bacteria around to neighboring pores, but it may also cause a permanent scar. It may also make your pimples worse.

Another reason why popping lip pimples is especially discouraged is that lips are part of your "danger triangle". Long story short the blood vessels in these areas are directly connected to the blood vessels in your brain and if pimples in these areas are irritated they can spread the infection in the blood vessels. The blood clot from this infection can be deadly.

  • Treat your underlying medical conditions

If you start getting lip pimples after you develop symptoms of another illness or after using a certain medication, see your physician treat these conditions. Oftentimes, illnesses like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other hormonal disturbances can cause pimples to appear on the face and lips sporadically. Medicines like oral birth control pills and steroids can also cause acne as a side effect. If you relate to these, you may want to give your doctor a visit.

Easy Remedies To Relieve Lip Pimples

You took all the possible precautions (or maybe you slipped up once in a while, who doesn't?) but still woke up with your top lip tender and the hint of a pimple head forming. Don't fret, though. Lip pimples seem to be unavoidable in some cases, so don't panic. Let's go through a few remedies you can do to make sure you get rid of that zit fast.

First things first, follow all the steps we mentioned as precautionary measures, so the pimples don't spread.

Now for actually dealing with the lip pimples. Here are a few tips you can follow:

  • Wash the area with mild soaps and don’t apply pressure on the pimple
  • Apply over-the-counter topical antibiotics creams and ointments
